About Alan

Approaching the finish of the 3 day, 96 mile, Devil's Challenge in 2018. Finishing 2nd overall.
I have a background in many sports including cycling and rowing. These days my focus is on running marathons and ultra marathons. I'm in no danger of challenging the running elite, but I have won several ultra marathon trophies in my age category. To date I have completed approximately 90 marathons and 45 ultra marathons and I am a member of the 100 marathon club. In 2012 I set a new record for crossing the English Channel in a Cornish Adventure Gig, along with 7 of my clients.
I qualified as a personal trainer in 2007 with Premier Training International. Soon after this I gained my first kettlebell qualification and I have been a fan of kettlebells ever since. I started teaching group kettlebell classes in Cambridge in 2009 and, prior to the Covid pandemic, I was teaching 9 kettlebell group classes per week. In late 2023 I moved to Knaresborough and I started teaching kettlebell group classes here in 2024.
I am passionate about furthering my understanding of human anatomy and movement. I'm always aiming to further my skills as a trainer along with adding to my knowledge of anatomy and physiology so that I can best help my clients achieve their goals. In 2023 I qualified as a Polestar Pilates teacher. The Polestar Pilates curriculum has earned the reputation worldwide as the most scientifically sound Pilates curriculum, setting the standard in Pilates education.
If you would like to register your interest in either joining a kettlebell class or a Pilates class then do please use the contact form. If you'd like to learn more about personal training and how I can help you then do get in touch to request a free consultation.

More About Me
As mentioned above, my main sport is running marathons and ultra marathons. I ran my first marathon in 2004 and recorded a time of 3 hours 24 minutes. The following year I ran my first London marathon in a time of 2 hours 58 minutes. Strangely, I was always terrible at sport when I was younger. I was one of those kids who would always be picked last for any team sport at school. But in my adult life I developed a passion for both cycling and running, and discovered that I was reasonably good at the latter. Like many people, I started by running 5km a couple of times a week, until a friend suggested I entered a 10km race with her. At that time 10km seemed very challenging and I had no ambition to ever run a marathon. But by sticking with it and following a plan running longer distances started to feel easy. I then entered my first half marathon in 2002, and then my first marathon 2 years later. The following year, 2005, I was lucky to gain a London marathon place through the ballot and ran my first London marathon in 2 hours 58 minutes, which was an improvement of 27 minutes from the previous year. I decided that the knowledge I'd gained when training for my first London marathon, and my new found passion for fitness, was something that I wanted to pass on to others. And that is when I decided to quit my job and train to be a personal trainer.
I believe that as a personal trainer it is important that I practice what I preach. I aim to set a good example for my clients, not only by training hard myself, but also by eating good quality food and meals prepared from scratch. I never eat ready meals and avoid processed foods as much as possible. I do like to have a beer, but never drink to excess. I also have a sweet tooth, but I restrict myself to homemade cakes and never something that is wrapped in plastic and full of preservatives. If you need guidance on nutrition, then I'm here to help.
